Animals + Writing was a one-day conference celebrating animals within worlds of writing.
It was an opportunity to recognize, reflect on and discuss the influence of animals on writers' practices within literary and academic contexts. Questions framing the event included:
Animals + Writing foregrounded recent developments in the representation of animals’ subjectivity and agency in writing, paying particular attention to the ethics of human and non-human animal interactions and relationships. It sought to link concerns with the ethics and aesthetics of human-animal relations, to foster dialogue and to initiate animal focussed writing endeavours. Animals + Writing was funded by the School of Letters, Arts and Media, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Sydney, the Faculty of Creative Arts, University of Wollongong and Voiceless, the animal protection institute. |
Visit our 'Writers in Residence' Blog!The 2013 Australian Animal Studies Group Animals + Writing and Life in the Anthropocene conferences hosted three Writers in Residence. In the lead up to and for the duration of the conferences our writers, Meera Atkinson, Liana Christensen and Olga Kotonowska posted their reflections and responses to the conference themes, papers, panels and activities.
As part of this writing initiative, conference delegates were invited to submit posts of up to 800 words and non-delegate academics and members of the public were invited to post comments.
